Needing a new roof

If by assistance you mean financial help to pay for it you can try contacting your local Area Agency on Aging (or call 2-1-1) to see if there are any assistance programs for such a thing.

This forum gets this question a lot (and also tree removal) and you need to realize that if you can't afford such types of maintenance and repairs then you cannot afford to live in your house any more. The expenses will not stop at just the roof. Please consider selling it (as is) and downsizing to a senior community apartment or even a facility.

“Needing a new roof” sounds a bit more major than “assistance with repairs”. You will need a lot of luck for either!

You've signed up to an international forum of caregivers to elderly loved ones here at Agingcare. Many of us could use some free help too, but that's not the purpose of the forum. The purpose is to ask caregiving questions and to share personal experiences with one another so we can all learn and support one another.

Contact your homeowners insurance about your coverage for a roof.

Good luck.

Yes, try your homeowners. If damage was done during a storm, it maybe covered. Call your Office of Aging to see if there are any programs out there.

Don't bother the office on aging about your choice to stay in your home. Everyone wants to stay in their home, but we have to be realistic.

There have been more and more posts on getting free home repairs. Contact some roofing companies like everyone else has to. If you cannot afford it, you need to sell your house as is and move to more affordable, appropriate housing. I don't know why people are recommending to contact agencies and bother them with this. Why do you expect free help? Why do you own a house if you can't maintain it?
If you have questions or need advice on caring for the elderly, I can assure you that we would be as helpful as possible with advice or recommendations.

You can call your local senior center and ask them about repair assistance programs for seniors. There are usually some qualifications that a senior needs to meet in order to receive the assistance. However, the senior center should at least be able to give you some useful information regarding repair work.

The senior center is not there to provide advice on home repairs. If you choose to stay in a house you can't afford, it is your responsibility to maintain it. Or just let the roof leak. Then you will have mold or electric or more structural problems, You will not get free repairs for these problems, either. They may be able to provide advice on available senior housing, though. That is the advice you need. Staying in a house you can't afford is a CHOICE.

You can also try calling your local news station, as in some areas they will periodically broadcast a news story informing senior residents about repair assistance programs.
